If you are purchasing a ring as a surprise for someone special, you may be able to find out his or her ring size by asking a family member or close friend. If you cannot identify someone who has this information, as a secondary strategy, you can take a ring that does fit the appropriate finger to a jeweler for measurement. (This may be tricky to do unnoticed.) The average ring size for women is 6 and the average for men is 10.

Also, most people are particular about the color metal of their jewelry. When shopping for someone else, pay attention to what he or she typically wears, rather than what is the latest trend. We recommend that you purchase a piece that aligns with the recipient's style and tastes.

You have the option of changing gems, selecting different size stones and making minor design alterations as indicated. Preventing Loss or Damage

• Remove your jewelry and store it in a secure place before engaging in physical activities such as sports (especially water sports) or gardening.
• When traveling, store your jewelry in your carry-on luggage. Do not pack jewelry in checked luggage or leave it out in the open in your hotel room when you are not there.
• Clean your jewelry at least once a week to prevent dirt buildup.
• Have your jewelry inspected annually by a trained jeweler who can identify if any gems are loose or if the jewelry has been compromised in any way.
• When not wearing your jewelry, store it in a safe place that would not be obvious should you be the victim of a home robbery.
• Silver jewelry will tarnish just by being exposed to chemicals in the air. Minimize this by storing silver jewelry in airtight bags or boxes.
